Pirates of Cthulu

You already know that Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most anticipated films of the summer. I wasn't that impressed with the first one and, despite the frenzy, have been only mildly interested in seeing Dead Man's Chest.

Until I saw the poster of this fella.

In the film, it's Davy Jones, captain of the Flying Dutchman. And from some of the sets and costumes, it appears he's really tricked out. Part pirate, part octopus, part lobster.

So I'm looking at this thing, tripping out, trying to figure out what it reminds me of. Then I got it! It's Cthulu -- one of "the old ones," a hideous creature in a pantheon of horrors created by H.P. Lovecraft. But that ain't all. He's also part Blackbeard, the most notorious pirate in history.

Cthulu's had many incarnations since its inception, inspiring dark societies, X Box games, anti-christian propoganda like Campus Crusade for Cthulu, toys and comic parody. But this is the first time I've seen a pirate of Cthulu. Oh well, I hope Disney knows what it's doing summoning the horror meister's star performer for its summer blockbuster.

"I hope Disney knows what it's doing"

I'm not quite sure Disney "knows" what it's doing ... other than making money ... and enjoying pushing creativity to its outer limits.

Funny ... I was thinking just yesterday ... how different would our world be if Walt Disney had been a Christian? His prodigy gifts and talents with a heart for God?

His movies would have mothers in them. They wouldn't always focus so much on scorcerers, etc, or on pushing the envelope on "tripping out" its audience.

I'm not a Disney-hater ... I grew up close to Disney World and spent a LOT of time there!

But I wonder ... one man who had such a monstrous affect on the whole world ... what if he had been a man after God's own heart?

even if pirates of the carribean was a lame movie, i'd pay to watch johnny depp swagger around so cute. anyday! he is my ideal man.

whoa!

but this octupus/bluebeardian guy sounds like a flick for my hubby that i'll either tolerate, fall asleep or read through.

never been big on sci-fi.

unless of course it has johnny depp in it. yeowza!

Hey, I think I dated that guy! Ha ha.
My 15-year-old daughter and her friends can quote the entire first Pirates movie and even mimic the sword-fighting scene. Scary, huh? I guess we'll be at the theater again soon...

did you see it yet mike? i haven't. and you know, i hadn't realized (i'm such a knucklehead sometimes, that you were saying this octoguy was in the film). duh. so my random comment, explained. sometimes, i just miss the obvious.

sometimes i get so fixated on it, i can't see anything else.

my bad.
suz.

ps and i was thinking, the reason i said, i'm sorry you left the ministry is probably more for the sheep than you. good shepherds are hard to find. yes indeed. any loss of a true shepherd to the flock is a bummer. you strike me as the true shepherd type. that's all.
